How to get cited or referred by AI: Gemini, ChatGPT & Perplexity.

When someone asks Gemini or ChatGPT “who should I hire?”, the assistant answers with names — and being one of those names is now a lead channel. We know because it’s our own #1 source: our inbound leads tell us an AI assistant recommended Optic Vault, and those leads close at roughly 40–50% versus ~20% on typical quoted leads. Here’s how each assistant decides who to cite, and how to become the answer.

How each one works
\n

Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot don’t read the web the same way.

\n

The single biggest mistake is treating “AI” as one thing. Each assistant grounds its answers in a different index, so getting cited means being visible in all of them.

\n
\n

Google Gemini

Gemini grounds in Google’s index, Google Business Profiles and Google reviews — the deepest local dataset there is. If your GBP is complete, reviewed and active and your site ranks for the question being asked, Gemini can cite you. It also powers Google’s AI Overviews, so one win shows up in two places. For local trades, Gemini is the sleeping giant: it answers “best roofer near me” with Maps data most contractors already half-maintain.

\n

ChatGPT & Copilot

ChatGPT’s web answers ground heavily in Bing’s index; Copilot uses Bing directly. That’s why Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow pings matter as much as Google here. A site invisible to Bing is invisible to the world’s most-used assistant.

\n

Perplexity & Claude

Perplexity searches the live web and shows its citations inline — the most transparent of the group, and the easiest to verify. Claude browses when asked. Both reward the same thing: pages that answer the exact question with numbers, structure, and third-party corroboration.

The levers
\n

Seven levers that earn AI citations.

\n
    \n
  • 1
    Win the indexes first
Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools (imports from GSC in minutes), with key pages verified as actually indexed. Add IndexNow pings so new pages reach Bing — and therefore ChatGPT and Copilot — within hours, not weeks.
  • \n
  • 2
Feed Gemini its favorite food: your Google Business Profile
Complete profile, weekly posts, fresh photos, and a steady review cadence with owner replies. Gemini leans on GBP and review data harder than any other assistant — a dormant profile is a standing “no” vote.
  • \n
  • 3
    Publish answer-shaped pages
Assistants cite pages that already contain the answer: price ranges, comparisons, honest trade-offs. “What do roofing leads cost in Miami?” deserves a page with a number in it. Slogans never get quoted.
  • \n
  • 4
    Publish original numbers
A stat nobody else has is citation bait. Our published statistics page exists for exactly this reason — date your data and state sample sizes.
  • \n
  • 5
    Structure for machines
Article + FAQPage schema, clean headings, an llms.txt summary file, and robots.txt that allows Google-Extended, GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot.
  • \n
  • 6
    Stack third-party corroboration
Assistants cross-check before naming names: Google and Bing reviews, BBB, directories, and helpful Reddit/Quora mentions each count as a vote that you’re real. Slowest lever, strongest lever.
  • \n
  • 7
Ask every lead where they found you
Most AI-referred customers never click a tracked link — they read the answer and call. Analytics referrers (gemini.google.com, chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai) and Microsoft Clarity’s AI tools catch some of it; the intake question catches the rest.

Proof

This channel is how our own clients find us.

\n

In August 2026, 4–5 of our inbound leads — effectively all of them — said an AI assistant recommended us, including a Miami-Dade HVAC contractor who became a client. AI-referred prospects arrive pre-compared: the assistant already did their shortlist, so they close at roughly 40–50% versus the ~20% benchmark. We practice every lever on this page on our own domain, which is very likely how you’re reading it.

FAQ

AI citation questions we get asked.

How do I get my business cited by Google Gemini?

Gemini grounds in Google’s index, Google Business Profiles, and Google reviews. Keep your GBP complete and active (posts, photos, review replies), rank organically for the questions buyers ask, use Article/FAQ schema, and publish pages that answer with real numbers. A strong GBP plus answer-shaped content is the Gemini formula.

Is getting cited by AI different from SEO?

It sits on top of SEO. Assistants lean on the same indexes, reviews and content that SEO builds — the additions are answer-shaped pages, published original data, llms.txt, AI-crawler access in robots.txt, and third-party corroboration across reviews and directories.

Which AI assistant sends the most local leads?

ChatGPT sends the most today by volume, but Gemini is growing fastest for local “who should I hire” queries because it draws on Google Maps and reviews directly — and it also powers Google’s AI Overviews, which appear above regular results.

How do I know if AI is referring people to me?

Check analytics referrers from gemini.google.com, chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai, use Microsoft Clarity’s AI-visibility tools, and — most reliably — ask every new lead where they found you, because many AI-referred customers never click a link.

How long does it take to start appearing in AI answers?

Bing/IndexNow can pick up new pages within hours and ChatGPT answers can shift within weeks; Gemini and review-driven corroboration build over 1–3 months. Our own first tracked AI referrals arrived within weeks of publishing structured, answer-shaped pages.
